Tuvalu’ land area increased by 2.9% despite rising sea level threat

  • Various reports on climate change and its effect, have warned that due to global warming, rising sea level would ultimately cause pacific nation Tuvalu to disappear from world map. But truth is that it is actually growing in size.
  • A University of Auckland study, published in the journal Nature Communications, observed the changes in the geography of Tuvalu’s nine atolls and 101 reef islands between 1971 and 2014, using aerial photographs and satellite imagery.
  • In this observation it was found that eight of the atolls and almost three-quarters of the islands grew during the study period, lifting Tuvalu’s total land area by 2.9 percent. This lifting took place despite sea levels in the country rose at twice the global average.
  • On this study basis the researchers challenged the assumption that low-lying island Tuvalu would be submerged as the sea rose.
