Gita Gopinath becomes first Woman Chief Economist of IMF

  • Indian-American economist Gita Gopinath has joined as the chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IFM) in January 2019.
  • She is the first woman to occupy this post at IMF.
  • 47 years old Gopinath has succeeded Maurice (Maury) Obstfeld as Economic Counsellor and Director of the IMF’s Research Department. Obstfeld retired December 31, 2018.
  • Mysore-born Gopinath is he 11th chief economist of the IMF
