- The Delhi government on 20 February 2018, launched ‘Mission Buniyaad’ for improving learning skills of children studying in state and municipal-run schools.
- The main objective of the mission is to ensure that students studying in primary schools in the Capital develop age-appropriate and class-appropriate reading and maths skills,
- Under the mission children will undergo a reading level assessment based on which they will be enrolled in specialised “Mission Buniyaad” classes.
- The Buniyaad classes will run in summer vacation from April to June for Class 3 to 5 in MCD schools and for Class 6 to 8 in government’s schools.
- Delhi education department will run the campaign in “mission mode” for three months from April to June this year.
- The municipal bodies of Delhi that run primary schools in the city will raise a cadre of teachers who will drive the programme, in a manner similar to the Mentor Teacher Programme run in Delhi Government schools.
- According to the Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia, the mission is being designed on the lines of Delhi government’s ‘Chunauti scheme’.
- The mission is based on the NAS survey report which demonstrated that about half of all children in government schools were not able to read their grade level textbooks.
