Pakke Hornbill Festival is now the state festival of Arunachal Pradesh

  • Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has announced that the ‘Pakke Paga Hornbill Festival (PPHF)’will the “state festival”.
  • He made this announcement during 5th edition of festival held at Seijosa in East Kameng district on the bank of Pakke River.
  • The first-ever PPHF was held on January 16–18, 2015. It is recognition of the role played by the resident Nyishi tribe in conserving hornbills in the Pakke Tiger Reserve (PTR).
  • The Nyishi tribe is known for their prowess in hunting and it was their means for sustenance. They hunted Hornbills not only for meat but the large beaks and feathers of the birds. Nyishi men have worn a headgear named Bopiya with the upper beak of Hornbills. Now they play important role in the conservation of Hornbills.
