14th Edition of India–Maldives Joint Military Exercise ‘EKUVERIN’

The 14th edition of Joint Military Exercise EKUVERIN between the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) began on 2 December 2025 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

  • The exercise will run from 2 to 15 December 2025.

Participating Contingents

  • Indian Army:
    • 45 personnel from a battalion of the GARHWAL RIFLES.
  • Maldives National Defence Force:
    • A contingent of equal strength (45 personnel).

Significance of the Exercise

  • The word “EKUVERIN” in Dhivehi means “Friends”, symbolising the close friendship, mutual trust, and strong defence ties between India and the Maldives.
  • Since its inception in 2009, the exercise has been held alternately in both countries.

Broader Importance

  • EKUVERIN is a key component of:
    • India’s Neighbourhood First Policy
    • Efforts to build enduring defence partnerships with friendly neighbouring nations
  • The exercise focuses on:
    • Enhancing interoperability
    • Strengthening counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency capabilities
    • Building greater military cooperation and understanding
