47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits Concluded in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 25–28 October 2025.

  • Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as Chair of ASEAN 2025, presided over the meetings and emphasised the importance of ASEAN centrality, unity, and dialogue in addressing regional and global challenges. “We revived dialogues, built new bridges, and proved that ASEAN’s machinery, when guided by patience and reason, still works,” he said during the closing ceremony.
  • Malaysia formally handed over the ASEAN Chairmanship for 2026 to the Philippines.
  • India was represented by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who led the Indian government delegation.

About the ASEAN Summit

  • The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established in 1967.
  • Member States: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste (newest member).
  • The ASEAN Summit is the highest decision-making body of ASEAN.
  • It is generally held twice a year, with the host country determined by the rotating ASEAN Chairmanship.
  • The first ASEAN Summit was held in Bali, Indonesia, on 23–24 February 1976.

Significance of the 47th Summit

  • Reaffirmed ASEAN Centrality amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
  • Focused on economic integration, digital transformation, climate resilience, and regional security cooperation.
  • Marked Timor-Leste’s continued participation as ASEAN’s newest member.
