64th Session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development (CSocD64)

India reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive and rights-based social development at the 64th Session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development (CSocD64) held at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Delivering India’s national statement, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur said that the country’s approach to social justice and social protection is firmly rooted in constitutional guarantees and aligned with the long-term national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

She highlighted that India’s social development policies focus on inclusion, equity and empowerment, particularly for women, children and vulnerable sections, while ensuring that growth remains people-centric.

The Commission for Social Development (CSocD) functions under the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and serves as the UN’s principal advisory body on social development issues. Since the World Summit for Social Development held in Copenhagen in 1995, the Commission has been responsible for overseeing the follow-up and implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action.

Originally established in 1946 by an ECOSOC resolution and known as the Social Commission, it was renamed the Commission for Social Development in 1966. The CSocD meets annually at UN Headquarters in New York, usually in February. Its membership, initially limited to 18 countries, has expanded over time and currently stands at 46 member states.
