8th Academy (Oscar) Awards

The darkly comic thriller One Battle After Another emerged as the biggest winner at the 98th Academy Awards, taking home the Best Picture award and leading the night with six trophies on March 16.

Its director, Paul Thomas Anderson, also won the Best Director award for the film.

Major Acting Awards

  • Best Actor: Michael B. Jordan for his performance in Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler.
  • Best Actress: Jessie Buckley for portraying Agnes Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare, in Hamnet.
  • Best Supporting Actor: Sean Penn for his role as an obsessed military officer in One Battle After Another.
  • Best Supporting Actress: Amy Madigan for playing Aunt Gladys in the horror film Weapons.

Other Key Winners

  • Best Cinematography: Autumn Durald Arkapaw for Sinners, becoming the first woman and first Black cinematographer to win the award.
  • Best International Feature Film: Sentimental Value, directed by Joachim Trier. It is the first Norwegian film to win in this category after six previous nominations.
  • Best Animated Feature: KPop Demon Hunters, which became a global hit on Netflix.
  • Best Original Song: Golden.

Record Nominations

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners made Oscars history with 16 nominations, the highest ever for a single film, surpassing the previous record of 14 nominations held by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land.

The winners of the gold Oscar statuettes are chosen by the roughly 10,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which includes actors, producers, directors, and film industry professionals.
