On July 27, 2025, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the Aadi Thiruvathirai Festival at the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple in Tamil Nadu. The event celebrated the profound spiritual energy of Lord Shiva and the rich heritage of the Chola Empire.

  • Commemorative Coin Release: The Prime Minister released a commemorative coin honoring Rajendra Chola I, one of India’s greatest emperors, during a public event at the temple.

    • 1,000 years of Rajendra Chola I’s legendary maritime expedition to South East Asia.
    • The commencement of the construction of the iconic Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, a magnificent example of Chola architecture.
    • The Aadi Thiruvathirai Festival itself, which is significant as Rajendra Chola’s birth star, Thiruvathirai (Ardra), began on July 23rd this year.
  • Tribute to Rajendra Chola I: Rajendra Chola I (1014–1044 CE) was lauded as a powerful and visionary ruler under whom the Chola Empire expanded its influence across South and Southeast Asia. He established Gangaikonda Cholapuram as his imperial capital after his victorious campaigns.
  • Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple: The temple, built by Rajendra Chola I, served as a beacon of Shaiva devotion, monumental architecture, and administrative prowess for over 250 years. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its intricate sculptures, Chola bronzes, and ancient inscriptions.
  • Tamil Shaiva Bhakti Tradition: The Aadi Thiruvathirai festival also celebrates the vibrant Tamil Shaiva Bhakti tradition, which was strongly supported by the Cholas and immortalized by the 63 Nayanmars (saint-poets of Tamil Shaivism).
  • Chola Legacy for “Viksit Bharat”: In his address, PM Modi described the Chola Empire as an “ancient roadmap for a developed India” (Viksit Bharat), emphasizing its economic and military achievements, particularly its strong navy, as inspiration for a strong and self-reliant nation. He also mentioned plans to erect grand statues of Rajaraja Chola and Rajendra Chola in Tamil Nadu.
