AIDIS & SAS of Agricultural Households

The National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), will conduct two flagship nationwide surveys — the All India Debt and Investment Survey (AIDIS) and the Situation Assessment Survey (SAS) of Agricultural Households — between July 2026 and June 2027.

Legacy of the National Sample Surveys

Since its establishment in 1950, the NSO has been conducting large-scale household surveys covering diverse social and economic aspects such as consumption, employment, health, indebtedness, and assets. These surveys form the backbone of evidence-based policymaking in India.

All India Debt and Investment Survey (AIDIS)

The AIDIS is among India’s most important surveys on household finance. Its roots trace back to the All India Rural Credit Survey (1951–52), later expanded in 1961–62 to include debt and investment. Conducted roughly once every decade, the latest round was the 77th (2019), undertaken at the request of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

  • Purpose: To collect data on household indebtedness and asset ownership in both rural and urban areas.
  • Significance: Informs national accounts, asset inequality analysis, credit market studies, and policy decisions by RBI, MoSPI, and other institutions.

Situation Assessment Survey (SAS) of Agricultural Households

Launched in 2003, the SAS assesses the economic conditions of farming communities. Expanded in 2013 to cover all agricultural households and further strengthened in 2019, the survey provides comprehensive insights into the livelihoods, income, and challenges of agricultural households.

Crucial Inputs for Policymaking

Together, AIDIS and SAS will provide critical statistical inputs for understanding India’s household finance and agricultural economy, supporting targeted interventions and long-term policy formulation.
