Algeria officially becomes member country of New Development Bank

New Member: Algeria officially became a member of the NDB on May 19, 2025, by depositing its instrument of accession in accordance with the Bank’s Articles of Agreement.

  • Global Expansion: Algeria’s membership is part of the NDB’s broader strategy to diversify and expand its global footprint beyond the original BRICS group.

About the New Development Bank:

  • Founded: 2015 by BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
  • Headquarters: Shanghai, China.
  • Purpose: To mobilize resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging and developing economies.
  • Projects Approved: Over 120 projects, totaling $40 billion, across sectors such as:
    • Clean energy
    • Transport infrastructure
    • Water supply and sanitation
    • Environmental protection
    • Digital and social infrastructure
  • Capital Structure:
    • Authorized capital: USD 100 billion
    • 1 million shares with a par value of USD 100,000 each
  • Leadership Rotation: Presidency and vice-presidency rotate among founding BRICS members.
  • Open Membership: The NDB is open to all UN member states, allowing it to become a truly global development finance institution.
