Why in the News?

  • On 22 August 2025, a U.S. federal judge issued a preliminary injunction ordering the closure of a Florida immigration detention centre, nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz”.
  • The centre was established only two months ago in the Florida Everglades National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The detention site has drawn criticism for poor detainee treatment, environmental violations, and its controversial location.

About “Alligator Alcatraz” Detention Centre

  • Nickname origin:
    • Alcatraz → infamous U.S. prison located on an island near San Francisco, considered inescapable.
    • Alligator → reference to Florida’s abundant alligator population.
  • Setup: Large white tents with bunk beds, surrounded by chain-link cages.
  • Purpose: Established during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown to house migrants.
  • Criticism:
    • Harsh living conditions.
    • Alleged violations of environmental laws within a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.

About Everglades National Park

  • Located in Florida, USA.
  • Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wetland of International Importance (Ramsar site), and International Biosphere Reserve.
  • Unique ecosystem with sawgrass marshes, mangroves, and rich biodiversity, including alligators, crocodiles, panthers, and manatees.
