Amul and IFFCO secure top two global ranks among cooperatives

The Union Minister of Cooperation congratulated Amul (GCMMF) and IFFCO for securing the top two ranks among the world’s leading cooperatives in the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA)- World Cooperative Monitor 2025. The report was released at the ICA CM50 Conference in Doha, Qatar.

Amul (GCMMF) – World No. 1 Cooperative:

  • Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets products under the Amul brand, ranked No. 1 globally based on GDP per capita performance.
  • Recorded an annual turnover of USD 7.3 billion (₹60,000 crore) in 2023–24.
  • Procures around 35 million litres of milk daily from 18,600 village cooperatives, covering 18 member unions, 33 districts, and 3.6 million milk producers.

IFFCO – World No. 2 Cooperative:

  • Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), founded in 1967 and headquartered in New Delhi, ranked second globally.
  • One of the world’s largest fertiliser cooperatives, with a network of 35,000 member societies, reaching over 50 million farmers across India.

Cooperatives: Backbone of Inclusive Growth:

  • Cooperatives are people-centered enterprises owned and run by members for collective economic, social and cultural benefits.
  • They play a key role in empowering farmers, women, and small entrepreneurs, embodying the spirit of “Sahkar se Samriddhi.”
  • India today has a network of 8.42 lakh cooperative societies across sectors like agriculture, credit, housing, and women’s welfare.

Constitutional and Legal Framework:

  • The 97th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2011 granted constitutional status to cooperatives.
    1. Article 19(1)(c): Right to form cooperative societies made a Fundamental Right.
    2. Article 43B: Inserted in DPSP to promote cooperative societies.
    3. Part IXB: Added provisions for incorporation, regulation, and winding up of cooperatives.
  • State Cooperatives: Governed by State Cooperative Acts (Entry 32, State List).
  • Multi-State Cooperatives: Governed by Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002 (Entry 44, Union List).

White Revolution 2.0:

  • Launched by the Union Ministry of Cooperation on 19 September 2024, inaugurated on 25 December 2024.
  • Aim: 50% increase in milk procurement by dairy cooperatives over five years.

Global Observances:

  • International Day of Cooperatives: Observed annually on the first Saturday of July; in 2025, it falls on 5th July, themed on “practical solutions and real impact.”
  • United Nations Declaration: 2025 declared as International Year of Cooperatives (IYC 2025) to highlight cooperatives’ role in economic growth, social inclusion, and sustainability.
