Andhra Pradesh Launches ‘Project HANUMAN’ to Address Human–Wildlife Conflict

On World Wildlife Day 2026, the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh launched Project HANUMAN to tackle the rising problem of human–wildlife conflict in the state. The project was unveiled at the Andhra Pradesh Special Police 6th Battalion Parade Grounds in Mangalagiri in Guntur district.

Meaning of HANUMAN
‘HANUMAN’ is an acronym for “Healing and Nurturing Units for Monitoring, Aid and Nursing of Wildlife.” The initiative aims to strengthen rapid response, rescue operations and medical care for wildlife affected by human-wildlife conflict.

Rising Human–Wildlife Conflict
In recent years, cases of human–wildlife conflict have increased in Andhra Pradesh. During the 2025–2026 fiscal year, the state recorded 2,107 incidents of such conflicts. The government paid nearly ₹4 crore as compensation to affected individuals and families.

Creation of ‘Vajra’ Wildlife Protection Teams
The state government, through the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department, has also initiated the formation of village-level “Vajra” (Wildlife Rakshak) teams. These teams will assist authorities in monitoring wildlife movement and responding quickly to conflict situations.

Rapid Response Vehicles and Wildlife Care
Under Project HANUMAN, the government will deploy 100 specialised vehicles, including:

  • 93 Rapid Response Vehicles
  • 7 Wildlife Ambulances

Each vehicle will carry a team comprising a forest range officer, veterinary staff, tribal helpers and para-veterinary personnel to provide rescue, treatment and rehabilitation for injured wildlife.

Wildlife Rescue and Treatment Centres
To further strengthen conservation efforts, the state has established four wildlife rescue and treatment centres in:

  • Visakhapatnam
  • Rajamahendravaram
  • Tirupati
  • Birlut
