Antarctica Day 2025

Antarctica Day is observed globally on 1 December to mark the signing of the Antarctica Treaty (1959), which reserves the continent for peaceful purposes and scientific research.

  • At the NCPOR campus, Vasco-da-Gama, Goa, Governor Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju attended as Chief Guest on 1 December 2025.
  • The Governor commended the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) for becoming the anchor of India’s polar and oceanic exploration.

Silver Jubilee Landmark

  • A special commemorative postage stamp was released by the Governor to mark the Silver Jubilee (25 years) of NCPOR’s establishment.

  • NCPOR plays a leading role in India’s research initiatives in:
    • Antarctic region
    • Arctic region
    • Southern Ocean
  • The institute manages India’s network of permanent research stations: In Antarctica:
    • Dakshin Gangotri – India’s first Antarctic research station

    • Bharati
    In the Arctic:
    • Himadri
    In the Himalayas:
    • Himansh – high-altitude research station for glaciological and climate studies
