Arctic Seals and Birds Face Rising Threats from Climate Change and Human Activity: IUCN

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has released an updated list of endangered species, revealing growing threats to Arctic seals and birds due to climate change and human activities.

  • Main Threats Identified:
    • Birds face habitat loss caused by logging and agricultural expansion.
    • Seals are increasingly affected by global warming, maritime traffic, and other human activities.
  • Status Changes:
    • The hooded seal has been moved from “vulnerable” to “endangered”.
    • Bearded and harp seals are now classified as “near threatened.”
  • Global Data: The IUCN Red List now includes 172,620 species, of which 48,646 are threatened with extinction.
  • Major Causes:
    • Global warming is rapidly destroying natural habitats in the Arctic.
    • Additional pressures include maritime traffic, mining and oil extraction, industrial fishing, and hunting.
  • Significance: The findings highlight the urgent need for global conservation action to protect fragile Arctic ecosystems and mitigate the effects of climate change on vulnerable wildlife.
