Argentina Officially Withdraws from WHO

Argentina has formally withdrawn from the World Health Organization, marking a significant shift in its engagement with global health institutions.

Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno confirmed that the country had submitted a formal notification to the United Nations Secretary-General on March 17, 2025. In accordance with the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, the withdrawal has taken effect one year after the notification.

Argentina had initially announced its intention to exit the WHO in February 2025. While the move signals a departure from multilateral health frameworks, the government has indicated that it will continue cooperation through bilateral and regional mechanisms.

About the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties

  • Applies only to written treaties between states.
  • Establishes rules and procedures for the creation, operation, and termination of treaties.
  • Focuses on procedural aspects rather than the substantive rights and obligations under treaties (often referred to as treaty law).
