Armenia Joins the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Armenia has officially become the newest State Member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The announcement was made during the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 held in Abu Dhabi.

  • Benefits of Membership:
    • Through its membership, Armenia will gain access to global conservation expertise, innovative tools, and international partnerships.
    • The collaboration will help accelerate Armenia’s national conservation and sustainability goals.
  • Ecological Diversity of Armenia:
    • Situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Armenia hosts diverse ecosystems such as alpine meadows, mountain forests, semi-deserts, and freshwater systems.
    • The country is home to several rare and threatened species, including:
      • The Critically Endangered Caucasian leopard
      • The endemic Bezoar goat
      • The Sevan trout, found only in Lake Sevan
  • National Conservation Goals:
    Armenia’s membership aligns with its broader green transition agenda, which includes:
    • Restoring forests across 12.9% of national territory by 2030.
    • Protecting freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversity.
    • Integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into national environmental policies.
  • About IUCN:
    • Established in 1948, the IUCN has grown into the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network.
    • It brings together governments, NGOs, and Indigenous Peoples’ Organisations from over 160 countries.
    • Its six commissions comprise more than 17,000 experts worldwide, contributing to global conservation science, policy, and practice.
