ASI Highlights Conservation Efforts at Sittanavasal

According to the Union Ministry of Culture, at present, there is no proposal for additional infrastructure development at Sittanavasal.

About Sittanavasal

  • Location: Viralimalai Assembly Constituency, Pudukkottai district, Tamil Nadu.
  • Status: Monument of National Importance under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
  • Historical Significance:
    • Contains a rock shelter with Jain ascetic stone beds and Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions.
    • Features a 7th–9th century CE rock-cut cave temple.
    • Known for rare early mural paintings, representing early Jain themes and ancient South Indian art traditions.

Conservation and Maintenance Measures

  • ASI undertakes continuous conservation efforts, including:
    • Special repair works based on structural and environmental needs.
    • Annual maintenance and upkeep to preserve the monument’s integrity.
    • Scientific monitoring to protect the mural paintings, which remain in a good state of preservation.
  • Research activities and documentation are regularly conducted to deepen understanding of the site’s art and history.

  • ASI conducts cultural awareness programmes involving:
