Asom Divas (Sukapha Divas)

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on 2nd December reaffirmed his commitment to carrying forward the vision of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom kingdom, who laid the foundation of what is known today as Assam.

What is Asom Divas?

  • Observed: December 2 every year.
  • Type: Regional public holiday in Assam.
  • Purpose: Commemorates the arrival of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha, founder of the Ahom Kingdom (1228).

About Chaolung Sukapha

  • Origin: A prince from the Tai kingdom of Mong Mao, near present-day Ruili, Yunnan (China).
  • Context: Denied his rightful claim to the throne, leading to his migration.
  • Migration:
    • Lasted ~13 years.
    • Involved crossing the Patkai mountains with a large following.
  • Arrival in Assam: Reached Namrup (southeast Assam) in 1228.
  • Legacy: Established the Ahom Kingdom, which ruled Assam for nearly 600 years, shaping its culture, polity, and identity.

Modern Significance

  • Assam today has over 30 million people.
  • Asom Divas celebrates:
    • Sukapha’s journey and state-building leadership.
    • The state’s rich cultural, ethnic, and historical roots.
  • Also called Asom Day or Sukapha Divas.

Current Relevance

  • CM Himanta Biswa Sarma (2025) reaffirmed commitment to carrying forward Sukapha’s vision for unity and civilizational continuity in Assam.
