Assam CM lays foundation stone for Cultural Museum Project for Exhibiting ‘Vrindavani Vastra’

Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, laid the foundation stone for a Cultural Museum Project at Khanapara in Guwahati. The museum will showcase the historic Vrindavani Vastra, a 16th-century textile masterpiece.

About Vrindavani Vastra

The Vrindavani Vastra is traditionally attributed to the Vaishnavite saint-scholar Srimanta Sankardeva.

  • It depicts scenes from the life of Krishna.
  • Considered a landmark work of Assamese weaving and devotional art.
  • Represents the rich cultural heritage of the Neo-Vaishnavite movement in Assam.

Currently, the artefact is housed at the British Museum in London.

Agreement for ExhibitionThe Government of Assam and the British Museum signed an agreement last year to bring the artefact to Assam for an 18-month exhibition, expected to begin in 2027. The new museum at Khanapara is being developed to host and preserve the historic textile during its stay.
