Assam Launches Financial Assistance Scheme for Udasin Bhakats

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on 2 January 2026 launched the Financial Assistance Scheme for Udasin Bhakats, under which celibate Vaishnavite monks will receive a monthly assistance of ₹1,500. The scheme is aimed at providing social and financial security to monks associated with Satras across the state.

Who Are Udasin Bhakats

In the Assamese Vaishnavite tradition, Satras are monastic institutions that function as religious, cultural and social centres. Devotees, known as bhakats, congregate in Satras for prayer and spiritual practices.
Satras where bhakats observe celibacy are known as Udasin Satras, and the monks associated with them are referred to as Udasin Bhakats.

Beneficiaries and Coverage

The Chief Minister stated that 620 Udasin Bhakats will benefit from the scheme. District-wise details of beneficiaries have been prepared to ensure targeted and transparent implementation.

Majuli: Heartland of Neo-Vaishnavism

The scheme holds special significance for Majuli, the world’s largest river island, which is regarded as the epicentre of Assamese Neo-Vaishnavism. Majuli is widely known as the land of Satras, playing a central role in preserving the spiritual and cultural legacy of the Vaishnavite movement.
