Atal Centre of Textile Recycling and Sustainability Established

The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) under the Union Ministry of Textiles has backed a pioneering project introducing India’s first scientific model for the dignified recycling of retired national flags and high-performance aramid fibres. The initiative is a significant step toward promoting sustainability in the technical textiles sector.

• Atal Centre of Textile Recycling and Sustainability Established
The project has led to the creation of the Atal Centre of Textile Recycling and Sustainability at Panipat, established under IIT Delhi. The centre integrates technology, innovation, and national objectives through two key programmes: the National Flag Recycling Initiative and the Aramid Fibre Recycling Programme.

• Structured Process Ensures Dignified Recycling
For the first time, India now has a structured, scientifically supported system for recycling national flags. Implemented with an industry partner, the process ensures that retired flags’ fabric is either preserved or responsibly repurposed without compromising its dignity.

• Alignment with National Campaigns
The initiative also aligns with the objectives of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, reinforcing national pride while advancing sustainable practices.
