AviList-First-ever unified global checklist of bird species

AviList, a unified global checklist of bird species and taxonomy, has been officially published. This comprehensive list comprises 11,131 species, 19,879 subspecies, 2,376 genera, 252 families, and 46 orders, aiming to standardize the understanding of avian classification worldwide.

  • Previously, ornithologists and bird enthusiasts relied on various global checklists, each with its own criteria for defining bird species.
  • AviList’s creation represents a significant step towards a unified view, the culmination of four years of collaborative effort by the Working Group on Avian Checklists.
  • This group includes representatives from prominent organizations such as BirdLife International, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the American Ornithological Society, the International Ornithologists’ Union (IOU), and Avibase.
  • AviList is set to replace existing checklists like the International Ornithological Congress (IOC) and Clements lists. It will be updated annually to reflect ongoing research and advancements in avian taxonomy.
