Bairabi-Sairang rail track

The Indian Railways has commissioned a new 51.38 km rail track to Sairang, a town just 18 km from Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl. This project is a crucial part of India’s Act East Policy and aims to improve connectivity with Southeast Asia.

Strategic Importance of the Sairang Railhead

  • Act East Policy: The Sairang railhead is a strategic asset for India’s Act East Policy, which seeks to establish rail and road connections with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other East Asian countries. This will facilitate trade, strengthen diplomatic ties, and enhance security cooperation.
  • Transhipment Hub: Sairang is also expected to be vital for the movement of goods from the India-funded Sittwe Port in Myanmar, a key component of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project.

Project Details and Impact

  • Connectivity: The new rail line offers a significantly faster and more cost-effective alternative to the existing Aizawl-Silchar highway. Once operational, a proposed Rajdhani Express from Sairang could reduce travel time to the rest of the country from five hours to just 1.5 hours.
  • Infrastructure: The Bairabi-Sairang section, which cost over ₹5,020 crore, features 48 tunnels and 142 bridges. However, the project was marked by tragedy when a bridge collapsed during construction in August 2023, resulting in the death of 18 workers.
  • Landlocked Mizoram: For landlocked Mizoram, this rail link represents a major improvement in accessibility, as the fastest current access to the rest of the country is through air travel.
