Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025

The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying released the annual publication of ‘Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025’ of Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying on the occasion of National Milk Day on November 26, 2025.

  • The BAHS- 2025 releases the estimation of production of Milk, Egg, Meat and wool in the country annually based on the results of Integrated Sample Survey (ISS).

Key Highlights

  • Milk
    • India Global rank is 1st in milk production.
    • Total milk production estimated at 247.87 million tonnes, up from 239.30 million tonnes in 2023-24 — a growth of 3.58%.
    • On per-capita basis, milk availability rose from 319 gm/day (2014-15) to 485 gm/day (2024-25).
    • Top five milk-producing states: Uttar Pradesh (15.66%), Rajasthan (14.82%), Madhya Pradesh (9.12%), Gujarat (7.78%), and Maharashtra (6.71%) — combined contributing ~54.09% of national milk production.
  • Eggs:
    • India is 2nd in Egg production globally.
    • Total egg production estimated at 149.11 billion eggs, reflecting a growth of 4.44% over 2023-24.
    • Per-capita egg availability increased from 62 eggs per annum (2014-15) to 106 eggs per annum (2024-25).
    • Major contributing states: Andhra Pradesh (18.37%), Tamil Nadu (15.63%), Telangana (12.98%), West Bengal (10.72%), and Karnataka (6.67%) — together accounting for ~64.37% of national egg production.
  • Meat:
    • India’s global rank in meat production is 4th.
    • Total meat production estimated at 10.50 million tonnes, registering a 2.46% growth over previous year. Poultry meat alone contributed ~5.18 million tonnes, about half the total meat output.
    • Top meat-producing states: West Bengal (12.46%), Uttar Pradesh (12.20%), Maharashtra (11.57%), Andhra Pradesh (10.84%), Telangana (10.49%) — together ~57.55% of national meat production.
  • Wool:
    • Total wool production estimated at 34.57 million kg, up 2.63% over last year.
    • Major contributing states: Rajasthan (47.85%), Jammu & Kashmir (22.88%), Gujarat (6.22%), Maharashtra (4.75%), Himachal Pradesh (4.30%) — together about 85.98% of national output.
