Bose Institute scientists receive Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics

The Experimental High Energy Physics (HEP) group at Bose Institute (BI), Kolkata has received global recognition with the prestigious Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics 2025, awarded as part of the ALICE Collaboration at CERN.

  • This $3 million prize honors the contributions of thousands of scientists from over 70 countries working within the four major experimental collaborations at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC)ATLAS, CMS, ALICE, and LHCb.
    • Bose Institute, Kolkata, stands out as the only Autonomous Institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, participating in the A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) at CERN, alongside other Indian collaborators.
    • ALICE is dedicated to exploring the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) – a state of extremely hot and dense matter believed to have existed just microseconds after the Big Bang.
    • The institute became a part of the ALICE Collaboration under the visionary leadership of Prof. Sibaji Raha, former Director of Bose Institute, who served as the Principal Investigator.
    • This international recognition highlights Bose Institute’s continued excellence and commitment to cutting-edge fundamental physics research on the world stage.
