BSNL Rolls Out Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) Nationwide

State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on January 1, 2026, announced the nationwide rollout of Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi), also known as Wi-Fi Calling, across all telecom circles in the country.

Seamless Connectivity in Low-Signal Areas
VoWiFi enables customers to make and receive voice calls and send messages over a Wi-Fi network, ensuring reliable communication in areas with weak or no mobile signals such as homes, offices, basements, and remote locations.

IMS-Based Technology with Smooth Handover
The service is based on IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology and supports seamless handover between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Calls are made using the user’s existing mobile number and standard phone dialer, without the need for any third-party application.

Boost for Rural and Remote Regions
VoWiFi is expected to significantly benefit rural and remote areas where mobile network coverage is limited, provided a stable Wi-Fi connection is available, including BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services.

Free Service, No Additional Charges
BSNL has clarified that VoWiFi is being offered free of cost, with no extra charges for Wi-Fi-based calls. The service also helps reduce congestion on traditional mobile networks.

Easy Activation and Device Support
The facility is supported on most modern smartphones. Users only need to enable the Wi-Fi Calling option in their handset settings to start using the service.
