Bulgaria Joins Eurozone as 21st Member

Bulgaria officially became the 21st member of the eurozone on January 1, 2026, marking a major milestone in its European integration journey. Celebrations included a display of euro coins on the façade of the Bulgarian National Bank in Sofia and fireworks across the capital.

Euro Adoption Expands Single-Currency Area
With Bulgaria’s accession, the number of Europeans using the euro has crossed 350 million. The last country to join the single-currency bloc was Croatia in January 2023.

Seat at the European Central Bank
Beyond replacing its national currency, Bulgaria’s eurozone membership grants it a seat on the European Central Bank’s (ECB) Governing Council, giving the country a voice in euro area monetary policy and interest-rate decisions.

Long Road Since EU Accession
Bulgaria, a Balkan nation of about 6.7 million people, has sought euro adoption since joining the European Union in 2007. Successive governments pursued the goal despite economic challenges and public debate.

Public Opinion Divided, Businesses Supportive
Opinion polls indicate that Bulgarians remain divided over adopting the euro, with concerns over prices and sovereignty. However, businesses have largely backed the move, citing benefits such as lower transaction costs, financial stability, and deeper integration with EU markets.

About the Eurozone
The eurozone (euro area) comprises EU member states that have fully adopted the euro as their official currency. Its foundations lie in the Maastricht Treaty (1992), which established:

  • The Economic and Monetary Union (EMU)
  • The euro as a common legal tender
  • A unified central banking system under the ECB

Members Using and Not Using the Euro
With Bulgaria’s entry, 21 of the EU’s 27 members now use the euro. The remaining six continue with their national currencies. Additionally, four microstates—Andorra, Monaco, Vatican City, and San Marino—use the euro through formal agreements with the EU.
