Bulgaria’s Euro Adoption Plans Face Protests Ahead of 1 Jan. 2026 Deadline

Recently, thousands of protesters gathered in Sofia to demonstrate against the Bulgarian government’s plans to adopt the euro and to demand a referendum on the new currency. The European Union has given Bulgaria the green light to adopt the euro starting January 1, 2026.

Bulgaria’s Path to the Eurozone:

  • EU Membership: Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007.
  • Final Hurdle: The last institutional hurdle for its accession to the eurozone is the approval from both the European Parliament in Strasbourg and the Economic and Financial Affairs Council in Brussels, which is scheduled for July 8.

About the Eurozone and Euro Adoption:

  • Current Eurozone: The euro (€) is currently the official currency of 20 out of 27 EU member countries, collectively known as the Eurozone (officially called the euro area).
  • Economic and Monetary Union (EMU): While all EU countries are part of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), only 20 have replaced their national currencies with the euro.
  • Convergence Criteria (Maastricht Criteria): To join the euro area, EU member states must fulfill specific ‘convergence criteria’.
    • These are binding economic and legal conditions agreed upon in the Maastricht Treaty in 1992.
  • Mandatory Adoption (with exceptions): All EU Member States, except Denmark, are required to adopt the euro and join the euro area once they are ready to fulfill these criteria.
    • The Treaty does not set a specific timetable for euro area entry; rather, it allows member states to develop their own strategies for meeting the conditions.
  • Denmark’s Opt-Out: Denmark uses the krone as its currency and does not use the euro. It negotiated a permanent opt-out from participation under the Maastricht Treaty of 1992.
