Cabinet approves National Sports Policy 2025

On 1 July 2025, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the new National Sports Policy 2025, superseding the 2001 policy. The NSP 2025 is built on inputs from central ministries, NITI Aayog, state governments, National Sports Federations, athletes, experts, and the public.

  1. Excellence on the Global Stage
    • Strengthen grassroots to elite systems, talent identification and nurturing
    • Expand competitive leagues and develop infrastructure (rural + urban)
    • Establish world-class coaching, training, support systems
    • Enhance governance of National Sports Federations
    • Emphasize sports science, medicine, and technology integration
    • Invest in training coaches, technical officials, and support staff
  2. Sports for Economic Development
    • Promote sports tourism and host global events in India
    • Strengthen sports manufacturing ecosystem and encourage startups
    • Foster private sector support via PPPs, CSR, and innovative funding
  3. Sports for Social Development
    • Promote participation among women, weaker sections, tribal communities, and persons with disabilities
    • Revive indigenous games
    • Recognize sports as a career by integrating with education and volunteering
    • Engage the Indian diaspora through sports
  4. Sports as a People’s Movement
    • Drive mass participation via campaigns and community-level events
    • Launch fitness indices for schools, colleges, and workplaces
    • Ensure universal access to sports facilities
  5. Integration with Education (Aligned with NEP 2020)
    • Embed sports within school curricula
    • Train educators and physical education teachers in sports pedagogy
  6. Strategic Framework for Implementation
    • Develop robust governance and regulatory framework
    • Facilitate private sector funding (PPPs, CSR)
    • Leverage tech and innovation (AI, data analytics) for performance and monitoring
    • Set up a national monitoring framework with KPIs and time-bound targets
    • Provide a model sports policy template for states & UTs
    • Adopt a whole-of-government approach by integrating sports into various ministries’ programmes
