Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI)

Representatives from several Central Asian countries have endorsed a six-year work programme under the Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI), aimed at protecting 17 iconic migratory mammal species across the region. The endorsement took place under the presidency of Uzbekistan, which is currently chairing the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP14) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).

About the Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI)

  • Launched in 2014 at COP11 of the CMS.
  • Provides a common framework for coordinated action to conserve migratory mammals in Central Asia.
  • Focuses on tackling transboundary threats such as habitat fragmentation, poaching, and climate change impacts.

Scope of the New Work Programme

  • Covers priority transboundary conservation regions across Central Asia.
  • Sets conservation priorities for the period of six years.
  • Emphasizes collaboration among range states, scientific research, and sustainable land-use planning.
