Centre Launches GIRG Initiative to Track Global Rankings

The Union Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) compiles several macroeconomic indicators, including:

  • Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimates
  • Monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI)
  • Monthly Index of Industrial Production (IIP)
  • These are prepared using internationally consistent methodologies.
  • The base year for these indices is periodically revised to:
    • Incorporate methodological improvements based on global guidelines.
    • Reflect structural changes in the economy.
    • Use the latest available datasets.

Global Indices for Reforms and Growth (GIRG) Initiative

  • The Government of India has launched the GIRG initiative to monitor progress on 26 selected global indices.
  • The purpose is to enhance India’s performance through inter-ministerial coordination, enabling targeted reforms and supporting growth.
  • These 26 global indices are published by 16 international agencies and span four broad themes:
    1. Economy
    2. Development
    3. Governance
    4. Industry

Role of NITI Aayog and Nodal Ministries

  • The Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) of NITI Aayog acts as:
    • The knowledge partner, and
    • The central coordinating agency for the GIRG exercise.
  • Under GIRG, the 26 indices have been assigned to 17 nodal Ministries, each responsible for implementing reforms and driving improvements in their respective indices.
