Centre Launches ‘Sujalam Bharat’ App to Strengthen Rural Drinking Water Governance

Union Minister of Jal Shakti C.R. Patil has launched the Sujalam Bharat app, a new digital platform aimed at enhancing governance, transparency and monitoring of rural drinking water supply systems across India.

Digital Push under Jal Jeevan Mission

Developed with technical support from the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N), the app will provide real-time information on water supply infrastructure created under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

Sujalam Bharat Database Operationalised

The launch marks the operationalisation of the Sujalam Bharat Database, which will establish a unified digital record of every rural water supply scheme in the country.

  • Each scheme and its service area will be assigned a unique “Sujalam Bharat – Sujal Gaon ID”
  • The ID will enable accurate identification of households served by each water supply system

Comprehensive Digital Profile for Villages

The database integrates multiple layers of information, including:

  • Water sources
  • Infrastructure status
  • Operational and maintenance records
  • Supply reliability
  • Water quality data
  • Community feedback

With this integration, each village will have a comprehensive digital profile of its rural drinking water system.

Boost to Transparency and Community Oversight

Officials said the platform will improve transparency and accountability of:

  • Gram Panchayats
  • Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs)
  • Local service providers

By making data accessible and verifiable, the app enables better community oversight and evidence-based decision-making.
