Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Regulatory Affairs in the Power Sector

The Union Minister of Power inaugurated the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Regulatory Affairs in the Power Sector at IIT Delhi, marking a significant milestone in strengthening India’s power sector governance.

Collaborative Initiative
The Centre has been jointly established by IIT Delhi, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) and the Grid Controller of India Ltd. (Grid India). The collaboration brings together academic expertise, regulatory oversight, and system operation experience.

Responding to a Changing Power Sector
The CoE aims to enhance India’s regulatory capacity at a time when the power sector is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by:

  • Rising electricity demand
  • Large-scale integration of renewable energy
  • Expansion of power markets
  • Growing use of digital technologies

National-Level Regulatory Hub
The Centre of Excellence is envisaged as a national-level hub for:

  • Regulatory research
  • Capacity building and training
  • Advisory support to institutions
  • Knowledge creation and dissemination

Role and Functions
Working closely with CERC and Grid India, the CoE will:

  • Identify key regulatory and sectoral challenges
  • Support human resource development and capacity building
  • Strengthen institutional capabilities in power sector regulation
  • Promote effective knowledge management and dissemination
