Chhattisgarh’s Kopra Reservoir Designated as Ramsar Site

The Union government has designated Kopra Reservoir in Bilaspur district, Chhattisgarh, as a Ramsar site, recognizing it as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention headquartered in Gland, Switzerland. The Chhattisgarh government proposed this status in November 2025. This milestone highlights the reservoir’s role in water security and ecological conservation.

Vital Water and Irrigation Hub

Kopra Reservoir blends natural and man-made features, primarily fed by rainwater and seasonal streams. It provides drinking water to nearby villages, supports irrigation, and sustains agriculture in dependent fertile areas. Local communities rely on its catchment for livelihoods and food security.

Biodiversity Hotspot

The wetland supports diverse aquatic life, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and dense vegetation. It serves as a key winter habitat for migratory birds, enhancing its ecological value. This designation will aid conservation efforts and promote sustainable management.
