Chincha Indians

New research by the University of Sydney has revealed that the pre-Inca Chincha civilisation achieved economic prosperity through the innovative use of seabird guano as fertilizer.

Key Highlights

  • Before the rise of the Inca Empire, the Chincha Indians thrived in the Chincha Valley near the Andes Mountains.
  • Their economy relied heavily on seabird guano, which is rich in nitrogen due to birds’ fish-based diet.
  • Chincha people collected guano from coastal desert regions and applied it to maize fields, leading to high crop yields.
  • The Chincha society was estimated to have around 100,000 people at its peak.
  • Scientists analysed 35 maize samples from burial tombs, confirming biochemical evidence of guano fertilisation.

Why Guano Was Important

  • Rich in Nitrogen → boosts soil fertility.
  • Improved Maize Production → surplus food supply.
  • Economic Growth → trade, diplomacy, and regional influence.
