Chlorpyrifos

The BRS-CoP 2025 (Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions) was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from April 28 to May 9, 2025.

  • Countries at the conference decided to eliminate chlorpyrifos, a hazardous pesticide, under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).
  • Chlorpyrifos is labeled as ‘moderately hazardous’ by the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • Despite the ban, the number of exemptions for chlorpyrifos use increased from 7 to 22 during negotiations.

The agreed exempted uses of chlorpyrifos include:

  • Crop-pest complexes
  • Control of leaf-cutting ants (for agricultural purposes)
  • Control of locusts (for agricultural purposes)
  • Control of ticks in cattle
  • Wood preservation against borers and termites in building foundations

The BRS Conventions are multilateral environmental agreements aimed at protecting human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals and wastes.
