Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2026

The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2026 was released at the UN COP30 Climate Summit.

  • Published jointly by Germanwatch, NewClimate Institute, and Climate Action Network.
  • Covers 63 countries + European Union and tracks climate mitigation performance.

India’s Ranking and Score

  • India ranked 23rd with a score of 61.31.
  • Dropped 13 places from the previous year’s ranking.
  • Shifted from a ‘High Performer’ to a ‘Medium Performer’.

Why India’s Ranking Fell

The report cites the following reasons:

  • No national deadline for coal phase-out.
  • Continued auction of new coal blocks.
  • India listed among the largest producers of oil, gas, and coal globally.
  • Lack of accelerated action for redirecting fossil fuel subsidies to renewable energy.

Key Demands by CCPI

  • A time-bound coal phase-down and eventual coal phase-out.
  • Shifting fossil fuel subsidies towards community-owned decentralised renewable energy.
  • Stronger policies for energy transition and emissions reduction.

Global Highlights from the Report

  • No country secured the top 3 places—indicating no nation is doing enough to avoid dangerous climate change.
  • Top performers:
    • 4th – Denmark (80.52 points)
    • 5th – United Kingdom (70.8)
    • 6th – Morocco (70.75)

Low-ranked Countries

  • Saudi Arabia at the bottom (score: 11.9).
  • Iran – 66th (14.33).
  • USA – 65th (21.84).
