Climate Risk Index (CRI) 2026: India Among World’s Most Affected Countries

The Climate Risk Index (CRI) 2026 report was released on November 12, 2025, by the German-based policy group Germanwatch on the sidelines of the 30th Conference of Parties (COP30) to the UNFCCC in Belém, Brazil.

Global Findings (1995–2024)

  • Extreme weather events have caused over 832,000 deaths and $4.5 trillion (₹39 lakh crore) in economic losses worldwide.
  • More than 9,700 extreme weather events were recorded globally during this period.
  • Storms and heatwaves each accounted for about one-third of fatalities, while floods affected nearly half of those impacted.
  • Storms alone caused 58% of total economic losses, estimated at $2.64 trillion.
  • The year 2024 was the hottest on record, with global average temperatures exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for the first time.

India’s Position

  • India ranks 9th among countries most affected by extreme weather events from 1995 to 2024.
  • India faces a range of climate extremes — from lethal heatwaves to devastating floods and cyclones — causing repeated economic and human losses that hamper recovery efforts.

Top 10 Most Affected Countries (1995–2024)

  1. Dominica
  2. Myanmar
  3. Honduras
  4. Libya
  5. Haiti
  6. Grenada
  7. Philippines
  8. Nicaragua
  9. India
  10. Bahamas

Most Affected in 2024

  • St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Chad, Papua New Guinea, Niger, Nepal, Philippines, Malawi, Myanmar, and Vietnam — mostly small island or low-income nations.

Key Takeaway

The report draws a clear connection between global warming and the intensification of natural disasters, warning that poorer nations in the Global South remain disproportionately vulnerable to the escalating impacts of climate change, despite contributing least to the crisis.
