Coconut oil price rise

Prices of coconut oil are soaring in Asia, with India leading the charge as its top consumer. The price has nearly tripled in two years, turning a kitchen staple into a premium commodity. This surge is a result of a combination of supply disruptions and booming demand.

Key Drivers of the Price Surge

The price increase, which began in late 2024, was accelerated by multiple factors impacting production in major producer nations like the Philippines, Indonesia, and India.

  • Supply Shortages: Output has been disrupted by adverse weather conditions, including extended heat, lower rainfall, and pest infestations. Globally, coconut oil production is falling as trees age, replanting efforts prove inadequate, and plantations face a shortage of better seed varieties.
  • Growing Demand: While coconut oil is a cooking staple in Asia, global demand for related products like coconut water, milk, and cream has been booming, particularly in Britain, China, the U.S., and Europe. The increasing popularity of coconut water for its health benefits has led to the premature harvesting of coconuts, further reducing the supply of mature nuts needed for oil and copra production.
  • Underinvestment: Years of low prices and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic led to underinvestment in plantations, which is now affecting yields and contributing to the supply-demand imbalance.

Market Outlook and Impact

Prices in India have reached a record ₹423,000 per metric ton, while global prices have hit an all-time high of $2,990 per ton. The International Coconut Community (ICC) forecasts that prices will remain elevated, in the range of $2,500 to $2,700 per ton for the second half of 2025, a significant increase from the 2023 average of about $1,000.

The surge in prices is making the product unaffordable for many consumers and is also impacting industries that rely on coconut oil for cosmetics and other goods. In some regions, this has led to a rise in the sale of cheaper alternatives like palm oil, and in some cases, the proliferation of adulterated products.
