Compromiso de Sevilla document

On June 17, UN Member States at the UN Headquarters endorsed the finalized outcome document, the “Compromiso de Sevilla” (the Seville Commitment). This document is set to be formally adopted at the upcoming Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in Sevilla, Spain, from June 30 to July 3.

Here are the key points about this significant development:

  • Cornerstone for Sustainable Development Financing: The “Compromiso de Sevilla” is intended to be the foundation of a renewed global framework for financing sustainable development.
  • Addressing the Financing Gap: It aims to tackle the widening $4 trillion annual financing gap faced by developing countries.
  • Co-Facilitators: The outcome document was co-facilitated by Mexico, Nepal, Zambia, and Norway.
  • Ambitious and Balanced Compromise: The co-facilitators lauded the agreement as an “ambitious and balanced compromise” with broad support across the UN membership.
  • Despite Divisions: The agreement was reached despite significant divisions on contentious issues, notably leading to the United States’ decision to exit the process entirely.
  • Fourth Major Conference: The Sevilla conference marks the fourth major UN conference on financing for development, following previous summits in Monterrey (2002), Doha (2008), and Addis Ababa (2015).
  • Future Impact: The conference is expected to yield concrete commitments and guide international financial cooperation, particularly in the lead-up to and beyond the 2030 deadline of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
