Election Outcome

  • Winner: NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan
  • Opponent: INDIA bloc candidate Justice B Sudershan Reddy
  • Result: Radhakrishnan secured 452 first-preference votes, Justice Reddy received 300 votes, while 15 votes were invalid.
  • Turnout: 98.20% — 767 MPs voted out of 781; 13 abstained (7 BJD, 4 BRS, 1 SAD, 1 Independent).
  • Announcement: Results declared by Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody.
  • The Vice President’s office had been vacant since 21 July 2025 after Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation due to health reasons.

About CP Radhakrishnan

  • Full Name: Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan
  • Born: 20 October 1957, Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu
  • Current Role: Governor of Maharashtra (since July 2024) before Vice-Presidential nomination.
  • Past Roles:
    • Governor of Jharkhand; also held additional charge of Telangana and Puducherry.
    • Two-time MP from Coimbatore.
    • Former BJP Tamil Nadu State President.
    • Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee (various terms).
    • Chairman, Coir Board (2016–2020): Oversaw record-high coir exports.
    • BJP’s in-charge for Kerala (2020–2022).

Political Journey

  • Began with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Jana Sangh, later joined BJP.
  • Rose through organizational and parliamentary roles to national prominence.

Significance

  • 15th individual to hold the office of Vice President, but counted as the 17th Vice President of India.
