On 29th August 2025, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was presented a Daruma doll by Rev. Seishi Hirose, Chief Priest of the Shorinzan Daruma-Ji temple, Takasaki-Gunma in Japan.

The gesture reaffirmed the close cultural, civilizational, and spiritual ties shared between India and Japan, rooted in centuries-old traditions.

  • The Daruma tradition in Japan traces back to Bodhidharma (Daruma Daishi in Japan), an Indian monk from Kancheepuram.
  • He is believed to have travelled to Japan over a thousand years ago, leaving behind a legacy that shaped Zen Buddhism and inspired the Daruma tradition.
