DGMS Celebrates 125th Foundation Day in Dhanbad

The Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), under the Union Ministry of Labour & Employment, marked its 125th Foundation Day on 7 January 2026 at its headquarters in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, commemorating over a century of service dedicated to the safety, health and welfare of mine workers across India.

Emphasis on Labour Reforms and Viksit Bharat
Addressing the occasion, Sushri Karandlaje highlighted the importance of recent labour reforms, noting that the four Labour Codes, which have consolidated and replaced 29 existing labour laws, are aimed at building a Viksit Bharat and strengthening social security, including for contractual workers.

Call for Awareness and Technology Adoption
She urged DGMS to actively promote awareness of the Labour Codes and to leverage modern technologies to further enhance mine safety standards. The Ministry assured full institutional support to strengthen DGMS in its mission of ensuring safer and more sustainable mining practices.

Legacy of DGMS
Established in 1902, DGMS has played a pivotal role in regulating mine safety and health standards in India. Over the decades, it has made a significant contribution to improving working conditions for mine workers and supporting the sustainable growth of the mining sector.
