Dhanu Yatra Begins in Odisha’s Bargarh

The 11-day-long Dhanu Yatra, recognised as the world’s largest open-air theatre, was inaugurated on 24 December 2025 at Bargarh in Odisha. The annual cultural spectacle transforms the entire town into a live performance space, earning it global distinction.

Town Turns into Mythical Mathura
During Dhanu Yatra, Bargarh is reimagined as the ancient city of Mathura, with nearby areas depicting Gokul and Vrindavan. The festival stages a dramatic re-enactment of episodes from Lord Krishna’s life, from his birth to the slaying of his maternal uncle, King Kansa.

Unique Theatre Without Walls
Unlike conventional theatre, Dhanu Yatra blurs the boundary between actors and audience. Residents, streets, marketplaces and public spaces all become part of the narrative, turning the entire town into a living, breathing storytelling canvas.

National Festival Status
The Central Government has accorded National Festival status to Dhanu Yatra, recognising its cultural significance, scale and uniqueness in preserving and promoting India’s intangible heritage.
