  • On August 21–22, 2025, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Drake Passage region (initially reported as 8.0 by USGS).
  • Tsunami alerts:
    • US Tsunami Warning System: No alert issued.
    • PTWC: Brief tsunami warning for Chile; possible hazardous waves within 3 hours along some Chilean coasts.

  • Location: Between Cape Horn (southernmost tip of South America, Chile) & South Shetland Islands (north of Antarctic Peninsula).
  • Geographic role:
    • Connects Southwestern Atlantic Ocean ↔ Southeastern Pacific Ocean.
    • Deep, wide waterway; part of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) — strongest ocean current in the world.
  • Historical note:
    • Named after Sir Francis Drake (English navigator).
    • First recorded crossing: 1616 by Willem Schouten (Flemish expedition).
