Druze minority

Deadly clashes have erupted in southern Syria over the past week, sparked by the reported abduction of a merchant from the Druze minority. The conflict intensified with the direct military intervention of Israel on July 15th.

  • Initial Spark (July 13): On July 13, the reported abduction of a merchant belonging to the Druze minority in southern Syria triggered days of fierce fighting.
  • Contending Factions: The clashes primarily involved Druze militias and Sunni Bedouin fighters.
  • Israeli Intervention (July 15): On July 15, Israel militarily intervened, stating its forces were acting to protect the Druze community. Israel also accused pro-government forces of attacking the Druze in Suweida and indicated its intent to eliminate these forces.

About the Druze Community:

  • Ethno-Religious Minority: The Druze are an Arabic-speaking ethno-religious minority primarily residing in Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and the occupied Golan Heights.
  • Faith: The Druze faith is an offshoot of Shia Islam, characterized by its own distinct identity and beliefs.
