ECI Unveils New Ballot Paper Design for EVMs Ahead of Bihar Polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a redesigned format for Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) ballot papers, set to debut in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. For the first time, the ballot papers will carry colour photographs of candidates to aid voter recognition.

Larger, Clearer Serial Numbers
The new design includes larger serial numbers printed in bold, international Indian numerals with a font size of 30, making them easier to read and reducing chances of confusion at polling booths.

Standardised Printing and Specifications
Ballot papers will be printed on 70 GSM paper, with strict adherence to standardised specifications to maintain uniformity across constituencies.

Distinct Colours for Assembly Elections
For Assembly polls, a distinct pink-coloured ballot paper will be used, with defined RGB values to ensure consistent shade and easy identification by voters and polling staff.

Part of Wider Electoral Reforms
The redesign follows revised guidelines under Rule 49B of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, and is among 28 initiatives introduced by the ECI in the past six months to streamline electoral processes and enhance voter convenience.
