Electronic Personnel License (EPL)

India has launched the Electronic Personnel License (EPL) for pilots. Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu introduced the initiative, making India the second country in the world to implement digital pilot licenses, following approval from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

  • Replacing traditional physical licenses, the EPL will now be available in a digital format, accessible through the eGCA Mobile Application.
  • This transition is expected to streamline the licensing process while enhancing security and transparency.
  • The adoption of EPL follows ICAO’s Amendment 178 to Annex 1 – Personnel Licensing, which encourages electronic licensing for improved efficiency and security.
  • The launch of EPL is part of a broader push towards digital transformation in Indian aviation.
  • The government has already introduced several groundbreaking initiatives, including the eGCA platform for licensing, the Digital Sky Platform for drones, and the Electronic Flight Folder (EFF) for airline operations.
